Just like people, horses vary in temperament and metabolism, so the same feed regime will not serve all horses. A dull coat and flaky hoof can be signs of inadequate protein and trace minerals in your horse’s diet. If your horse is chewing fences, you may not be feeding enough roughage.
Hard keepers may need special feed, or pre-chopped feed, if they are older and less efficient at chewing. Easy keepers may be prone to insulin resistance and need a very low sugar hay to avoid laminitis.
Our veterinarians can tailor a feed program for your horse’s nutritional and medical needs.
Dr Geertsema has developed a total mineral supplement, designed specifically for horses in British Columbia. Read more about it here.
